AI and Web3 Were Never Rivals

Why AI agents need blockchains, crypto wallets, and smart contracts to shift into second gear.

It took our human race millions of years to reach eight billion. AI agents could outnumber us within a decade or two.

Think about that for a moment. Not because the exact number matters, but because the direction is no longer in doubt. It's 2026, and frontier models — artificial brains — already reason longer, and more structurally, than most of us can on our best day. What they lacked until recently was a body.

Harnesses like Claude Code, Codex, Hermes and OpenClaw have changed that: they've given these brains eyes, ears and hands — the ability to actually do things, not just talk. And with hundreds of billions of dollars flowing into the arms race across energy, hardware, models and applications, they get better by the week. Sometimes by the day.

So the question for any serious leader — whether corporate CEO or solopreneur — isn't whether. It's are we moving, and how fast.

The business case is clear as day

AI agents let any organization cut costs, reduce cycle times, and treat every single customer like a VIP — the kind of service that used to be reserved for the largest, highest-paying accounts. There is no single right way to start — but there is a wrong way, which is to wait and observe.

Leaders, we don't need a perfect roadmap. We need to feel the urgency, mobilize resources at scale, and adopt the only posture that works at the frontier: fail fast, learn fast. Deploying agents will take real investment. But that number is small next to the cost of falling behind — and unlike most transformation spend, this gap compounds.

Sooner or later, we become the bottleneck

Given how early we still are, keeping humans in the loop is not optional. It's how you manage risks you can't yet predict. Review the work. Catch the failures. Extend trust slowly.

But here's the uncomfortable part. When AI generates output at machine speed, the human reviewer becomes the constraint. The pile grows faster than any team can clear it. At some point — gradually, deliberately, and sooner than most expect — we will have to step back, shrink the review queue, and let agents do more of their work autonomously.

Which surfaces the real problem nobody wants to talk about.

Our rails were built for people, not agents

Legacy IT was designed for human users — thousands of them, maybe millions. It was never designed for billions of autonomous agents acting at machine speed. And as long as we bolt auditability and observability onto those old rails, we will be playing catch-up with agents that get smarter every week.

Think it through to the end: an agent capable enough to do real work is also capable enough to tamper with its own audit trail. That scenario isn't science fiction. It's a straight line from where we already are.

Here's the good news. We already have a technology built precisely for this problem. It's called web3 — and I understand exactly why you just rolled your eyes.

The web3 objection, taken seriously

For years, blockchains have looked like a solution in search of a problem. A lot of that reputation was earned. So let me not hand-wave it: I spent years close to this technology, and most of what got built deserved the skepticism it received.

But the agent economy changes the calculus completely, and here's why.

An audit trail is only as trustworthy as its ability to not be altered. Record an agent's decisions, commands and transactions on a distributed ledger, and you get a single source of truth that is almost impossible to dispute or quietly rewrite — including by the agent itself. That is not a nice-to-have. Once agents operate at scale and at speed, tamper-evident memory is the difference between monitoring them and merely hoping.

Why an agent cannot hide tampering on a blockchain On today's systems an agent keeps the only copy of its audit record inside the environment it controls, so an edit leaves nothing to check it against. The tampering proves itself. The point isn't that an agent would lie — it's that you can prove whether it did.

Crypto wallets and smart contracts, it turns out, aren't a parallel universe competing with AI for attention. They're a prerequisite for AI to reach its full potential.

The second unlock: agents that transact

There's a second reason, and it's arriving faster than the first.

So far we've talked about agents doing knowledge work. But the more capable they get, the more they need to transact — buy a dataset for a few cents, pay two dollars for an API call, settle a micro-invoice. Do you really want to sit in the approval loop for every one of those?

Here's where the old world breaks. Banks were designed for humans. Their KYC and AML machinery assumes a person with an ID, a history, and a legal identity. An agent has none of that. TradFi simply has no native answer for a piece of software that needs to pay for something at 3am without a human present.

This is the moment crypto wallets and stablecoins stop being a punchline and start being the obvious answer.

Pocket money for machines

The model is simpler than it sounds. Think of how you give a teenager an allowance: a defined budget, scaled to their maturity and their purpose. You do exactly that with agents — assign each one a wallet and a spending limit appropriate to its job and how much it's earned your trust.

Letting agents hold value and exchange goods, services and data is one of the most overlooked capabilities web3 quietly already solved. It was just waiting for a customer that wasn't human.

The point

AI and web3 were never rivals fighting over mindshare and capital. That framing was always wrong. They're complementary — one produces intelligence and action, the other provides the trust layer and the payment rails that let that intelligence operate at scale, safely, and without a human wedged into every loop.

So: buckle up. Agents are going to advance what our organizations — and our species — can do, further and faster than most of us are ready for. That's happening with or without you.

But if you want to shift from first gear into second, you're going to need web3 — blockchains, crypto wallets, and smart contracts — to get there.
